Consequences of Coming Home Late

Today the sky looks so bright, the sun has been smiling widely since early morning, lifting my spirits. I went about my usual activities, which is going to campus. I went to campus using my personal vehicle. And I never imagined that today would be a day I would never forget for the rest of my life.
My name is Anisa. I am a third-semester chemistry student at a university in Semarang. Actually, my classes end at 2 p.m. today. However, I didn't go home right away because I had made plans with Lintang and Reni to work on a group assignment. "Where do you
want to work?" asked Lintang.
"Let's do it at my house and hang out," suggested Reni, inviting her friend. "Ah, no need. We'll be done soon, so
let's just do it at the campus," I replied.
"Hmm, okay, shall we do it in front of this classroom?" asked Reni.
"How about in Building V?" I replied. "
Okay, let's go," said Lintang.
We hurriedly walked from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences building on the 3rd floor to the library building. The library building was not far from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, only separated by a corridor surrounded by a garden. So we had to walk through the corridor to get to the library building. "How about
here?" I asked, making sure everyone agreed.
"No, there are too many students passing by here," Lintang rejected outright.
"Then where do you want to sit?" asked Reni, looking at Lintang.
"The third floor is fine," replied Lintang.
"I'm tired, Lin, going up and down the stairs," I complained to her. "There's an elevator, why
don't you just take the elevator?"
"He has a trauma about riding elevators," Reni said bluntly. "Huh? Seriously? How can he have a trauma? What happened
?" Lintang was stunned after hearing this. "Never
mind, I'll tell you later. Let's not get distracted," I replied.
After a lengthy conversation, we finally decided to do the task on the lowest floor.
I was still traumatized by what happened to me in the elevator, but I never told anyone except Reni. Reni has been my best friend since high school. I told her that it was a secret. So Lintang never knew that I was traumatized by elevators, which is why she was shocked when Reni brought it up. However, I changed the subject so that Reni wouldn't tell Lintang.
The three of us began to stare intently at the flat screen, agreeing with what Lintang said. The library building was still bustling with students coming and going. "Did you guys notice
something strange during the lab yesterday?" Lintang asked her two friends, who were still staring intently at the white screen.
"What strange thing do you
mean?" I asked curiously. "I saw a white shadow like a woman while cleaning the lab equipment...
" "Maybe there was a friend there," said Reni
, who was still staring at her laptop screen. "There was no one there, Ren." Lintang tried to convince her.
"Eh, stop scaring me, the assignment is already finished," I said while looking at the assignment.
After I said that the assignment was finished, Reni and Lintang asked me to go home with them, but I refused and told them to go home first because I wanted to pray first, afraid that I wouldn't have time to do it at home.
Reni and Lintang began to walk away from me. Now, I was alone, and I began to feel the darkness of the sky. The campus, which had been bustling with students, was now quiet. It was as if only the wind was blowing through my pores.
My campus is surrounded by rice fields and is quite far from the highway. Sometimes, even though it is still light outside, the crickets have already begun to compete with each other to show off their beautiful voices. At
that time, I did not immediately rush to pray. I was still thinking about what Lintang had told me, that she saw the shadow of a woman. Was it the same figure I saw in the elevator?
"Eh, what time is it?" I realized as I looked at my watch.
"Crazy, it's already 5:20 p.m., Maghrib will be here soon," I continued my monologue.
I hurried to the prayer room to pray Asr. The prayer room in this library building is on the second floor, so I had to climb the stairs first. The sound of my footsteps was so clear; you can imagine how quiet it was at that moment. I quickened my pace, when suddenly
I heard the sound of running water coming from the toilet.
"Is someone still in there?" I wondered. Out of
curiosity, I checked where the sound of water was coming from, afraid that the janitor had forgotten to turn off the toilet faucet. The toilet door from which the sound of water was coming was closed, so I thought someone was inside.
As I turned around, suddenly...
"Kriett.
" "Who's in there?" I asked, shouting a little. There was no reply. Out of curiosity, I
slowly opened the door. It turned out that there was no one in the toilet, and the sound of water had suddenly disappeared. I began to feel the cold atmosphere in the toilet. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Since there was no one there and the sound of water was gone, I closed the toilet door again.
A few steps after I left the toilet, suddenly, the sound of water was heard again. The sound of water was so clear, there was no way I could have heard it wrong. I went back into the toilet to make sure I hadn't heard it wrong. When I opened the door...
"Kriett"
My breath stopped instantly. I couldn't believe what was in front of me. I saw a woman's figure with her back to me. I could clearly see that she was wearing a long white skirt covered in dark red stains. I didn't know if it was blood or something else, but I knew I wanted to leave that place as quickly as possible. I tried to step away from her, but for some reason my legs felt so heavy, my body went limp, but with all my strength I tried to run away from that place. As I started to move away, suddenly I heard a voice. "Where are
you going?"
The voice was right behind me. I didn't know what was happening to me. My body felt weaker and weaker, and I felt like I was about to faint, but I tried with all my remaining strength. I didn't turn around at all. I just focused on the road ahead and quickly went downstairs. That
was my experience at college when I came home late.
